Just a little quick explanation when Openbox is started the screen is bare a right click reveals the Openbox menu I have mine customized to be as minimal as possible with the logic that I can get at whatever I need from a terminal or web browser starting point. When one minimizes windows they drop out of site center click reveals which applications are open from which the user can move or bring them into the workspace. Dead simple not to fancy but it gets the job done nicely. For more information check out the Openbox Main Page. Please realize that Openbox is really very extendable the way I am using it is a very minimal deployment.

When I rebuilt the server this time I went straight for the newest Ubuntu Server Product and found myself torn between convenience and function. As I stated once recently I was one of those people who got enslaved by GUI systems in the 90s I mean hell it just makes everything so easy. I settled for an Openbox environment that is not started by default but rather from a simple startx command. It is really really basic (screenshot to follow later) and with the addition of a some extra programs it allows me a nice range of options with no bloats to slow the machine down. In a one word description …sweet! The Gui tools I included are linked below

Synaptic
XFE
ROXTerm
Leafpad
Firefox

Well those are my GUI tools summoned with the startx command and once I am done using them the visual side can be shut off with an Exit directive located in the the Openbox on screen menu. This is about as easy as it gets I think.

BellyUp4Blues strives to bring you the very best in ass kicking Blues and Blues Rock on the internet. In April of 2003, the station was started for the love of the music and continues with that strategy to this day! BellyUp4Blues has always been and remains listener supported internet radio – that means no commercials – it also means that every penny it takes to run this station comes from you, our listeners (and out of our pockets).

So check them out maybe send some cash so they can keep flow!

I still stand by Who Makes These Rules Anyway. It’s just because I have a warped way of looking at things I decided to inventory the site (it’s still small enough to do that) and go for the badges I now have displayed in the sidebar. Some people say if it’s not broke don’t fix it whereas my view is more akin to constant improvement is necessary so fix it it until it is broke and be rewarded with an opportunity to make it better! Now of course this view is very utopian and and things do not always work out as planned. WordPress is pretty damned standards compliant out the box everything just works. Where it can fall apart is when (we) users start adding our personal touches and installing plugins. Just a statement really I have no axe to grind on this I’m glad they have such a wide array to choose from. In my inventory it did not take long to realize that one of the application’s best coolest features could as easily be one of its greatest, potentially dangerous pains. I mean every aspect form server problems to compliance issues is possible. On a homebrew setup like I am running probably not that big of a deal. I mean sh*t it’s only data I can always start over (that opportunity I spoke of earlier perhaps). Realistically though I think caution should be urged where plugins are concerned probably could be a big deal on shared hosting or a VPS. I mean security concerns alone I would think could loom huge here. I am not going to endorse or condem any plugins out there but after installing a few I have realized that all of them are not created equal.

I have been messing with the site scripts a little (adding plugins and such) and the the thing I notice the most is when I add a plugin to the mix the most likely outcome is broken XHTML or even fractured CSS. Really a big thanks goes out to this person for his free offering of this theme as a framework for us amateurs. Geez the theme only gets two stars oh well I guess to some people lean is unappealing. I was just glad the author took the time to make it uh er valid out the box so to speak. The thing that gets me is though who exactly decides what is and is not acceptable semantically speaking of course. Are they always right or is just one of those things that as web technologies improve that will become less and less relevant and of course eventually less supported. I mean come on now do the really big content providers place any noticeable emphasis on delivery of content in a semantically correct way. Oh btw way if anyone is interested since I’ve used variations of the word semantics (quite possibly wrongly) here is the Wikipedia page about it.

Just trying a shoot and blog tool for Android. A little premature probably, but it seems to function. If anyone is interested the app I’m using is available at this link. Now of course this thing is a little cumbersome to use but then again a phone is not a desktop computer either, regardless of how powerful the vendor says the phone is.

When it gets down to it a mouse and keyboard bring a whole lot to the computer experience. Don’t get me wrong though cellphones are the king of spontaneous interaction on the web nothing has come along to my knowledge anyway that can trump them. So my verdict I like this app and will use it until it stops working or breaks. I just hope it can follow me because I’ll be eligible for a phone upgrade soon and I definitely plan on taking advantage. I guess I am one those people that is addicted to tech fashion and have been for a long time.
